Background

A company operating a European financial compliance platform had been building its services around a PHP monolith for years. Their market was changing rapidly — new EU directives brought fresh requirements every six months — and developers were spending more time maintaining the old code than shipping new features. Leadership knew they needed a structural change but couldn't afford to stop the business while doing it.

A brittle monolithic system blocked rapid adaptation to regulatory changes, and every modification put the whole system at risk.

Solution

We split the monolith into ~30 independently deployable microservices with auditable processing pipelines and strict validation.

Approach

We did the migration on a live system: production stayed up continuously, new microservices ran in parallel with the old monolith, and traffic only switched once the new component proved stable. Weekly reviews with leadership, bi-weekly demos for the dev team, ADRs for every architecture decision — so the customer's team owned the direction, not us.
